Robots And Their Limitations.

Robots in the beginning were used for typical pick and place operations, where the tolerance and the sequence of the parts was clearly defined. Later robots improved to production operations like spot welding. Those task still limiting the robot to a few applications which are based on lower accuracy or high accurate fixtures.

The product range from ISRA VISION can eliminate these limitations by giving the robots eyes to see what the robot is doing.

Robot Vision.

ROBOT VISION is the field, where the robot will be guided to pick, place or move a part. This allows high accurate positioning of parts even, the position of the parts are not precise located. A first example for that could be bin picking. In this case, a scanner scans the bin, allocate the part and guide the robot to pick this part out of the bin. With the 3D scan data the robot can be guided to the part to pick it out of the bin.

Another example is guidance during assembly or any other movement. Two parts might be not very exactly aligned during production or assembly. The robot will be guided while measuring defined feature points in a 3D coordinate system. An accuracy of less than 1 mm is possible to guide the robot to the final position.

Quality Vision.

QUALITY VISION is the field where the robot is used for quality inspection. It is either, the inspection will be locally or the inspection will be done in the part coordinate system of the product.A typical type of local inspection is the bead inspection. Hereby the sensor is mounted on the robot together with the bead nozzle. During operation, the bead will be applied and the measured at the same time. After the bead is applied, the part is already inspected. This will shorten the production time compare to stationary systems.
For an inspection in the part coordinate system, the Body in White measurement is a typical example. This application is direct in the production line and uses usually 4 robots to inspect the part. The aim is not that it will deliver high accuracy results as a CMM, it is more towards 100% inspection and production control to analyse the trend. With this technology not perfect parts can be reworked in an early stage.
